I would also suggest going to a local garden center and looking at the different ammendments and soil mixes they sell there. I agree with the tape measurement of the yard. The bags tell you how much to buy and what they cover. I would also get the soil wet to see how dense it really is. You might even take a sample with you to the store.
References :
www.gardenguides.com

living in the north kind of limits your options as far as perennials go, because sowuthwestern plants will not survive cold winters.
you might want to cosider using a lot of large potted plants that would have to be brought indoors in the early fall. cactus, aloe, yucca are all good choices for large terra cotta pots.

there is one yucca that is hardy for northern climates: yucca filamentosa (common name--Adam's needle) try growing 1 or 2 as strong focal points.

a patio made of terra cotta colored tiles (you can get cement blocks dyed terracotta now too) would give your yard a S.W. flair. also having a chimmenia (wood-burning terra cotta stove) on the patio would add some functional and visual interest.

black wrought-iron or twig patio furniture with some navajo print throws would add a splash of bold color. A small fountain could work, but just make sure it is not too elaborite or "greek" looking. choosing a terra cotta over white or gray in all your pots and statuary, patio blocks, etc. will help create the S.W. feeling.

some annual plants you could grow that would fit the theme are:
-sunflowers (many varieties ranging in height from 1 foot to 8 feet, and ranging in color from white thru all the yellows and oranges to red and burgundy)--you could easily do a whole yard in just sunflower varieties alone.
-california poppies (bright orange and drought tolerant)
-rudbeckia (large, bright golden yellow daisies, the best rudbeckia is a variety called "Indian summer" its 2 1/2 feet tall)
-gazania (short, brightly colored daisies with jagged leaves; comes in hot colors)

some perrenials for a S.W. themed garden:
-sedum-succulent leaves; they look like desert plants but are perfectly hardy for northern gardens (come in many many varieties ranging in height from 1 inch to 1 foot), the small ones make excellent groundcover or to grow amongst rocks--make sure and get the ones that have yellow or white flowers.
-hens and chicks- succulent leaves, these are very tough and hardy little plants, they look just like tiny aloe vera plants. they are very drought resistant and will grow on the surface of a rock or between paving stones and patio blocks.(about 2-4 inches tall, and spread very quickly).

it would also look great to have a few pots of herbs on your patio. sage, rosemary, lavender, thyme. the silvery gray-green leaves look awesome in terra cotta pottery or strawberry jars.

I'd be real careful about adding accents like wagon wheels, lanterns, split rail fences, etc. or you'll end up with the rustic country bumpkin look instead of true southwestern.

use terra cotta wherever possible
choose plants that bloom in yellow, orange, white, (a little red is okay) and that have grey-green leaves or succulent leaves.
keep the ornamentation to a minimum and keep it plain and simple and not at all classical or European.
References :
professional gardener

Check the yellow pages under "Landscape Architect." They are experts in design, and know which plants will be suitable for your particular area.

A Concept Plan isn't too expensive, and should include a general design layout and a list of plants to use for different situations. Unfortunately I'm probably not licensed in your State. I have done a lot of work in the Las Vegas area woking with someone who was licensed in Nevada, so am quite experienced in that style of design and won a couple of awards on projects I've worked on down there. I use a similar design here, which is probably a similar climate to where you are.

Click on my profile and e-mail me and give me the specifics on where you are, I may be able to recommend someone in your area.
References :
Hi there. A lot of southwest landscaping incorporates the use of less water. Check out ideas related to an arroyo seca. It is made with rock with places for southwestern plants like cacti, http://www.cas.vanderbilt.edu/bioimages/pages/arizona-plants.htm can help you. Be sure these plants are hardy for cold weather. Some won't survive. The arroyo seca is like a large rock garden with plants that don't require a lot of water to maintain.Have a great time with your project and good luck
References :
If you have ever tried to dismantle a pallet you will know how well the are made, if you get pallets in good condition, and you can get amost new pallets quite cheap there is no reason why they can't be be used under decking but you MUST make sure the are based on a damp prevetion barrier, the best way to achieve this is to put bricks under the pallets and ordniary roof slates between the
pallets and the bricks, roof slates are one of the best damp proof barriers there is, make sure that no part of the pallets are in contact with the ground, or will be in the future, and as a precaution treat the wood with a good preservative. They might not last forever but the will last a very long time.
References :
Experience.

A small waterfall or pond with fountain, gold fish and lotus. Roses, if you can maintain them. Some moss and Korean grass. A few varieties of ficus that grow to be shady trees. I would not recommend cactus, since that is NOT considered good, from the Feng Shui angle. Plant some herbs of medicinal value. Maybe, a back drop of bamboo trees. Add some fruit trees. Palm trees, small ones ONLY, if there is too much thundering in your area. Have a kitchen garden in one portion. Leave place for seasonal flowers. Maybe one citrus tree of your choice. Jade helps. Consult some professional landscaper, too. Mere consultation, should NOT cost you much.
References :
There are many plants for shade, but you may not get the same bold color as you will with sun plants. Try these ideas, then fill in with annuals, such as impatients. The best bet for shade are daylilies -- buy ones that bloom at different times to get continual color, hydrangea (but dont put them too close to tree roots), hostas (not much color in flowers, however) Also, look for shade plants with unique leaves (hellaborus, cora bells).

Also, many ground cover flower in the spring and can handle the areas under trees:

Try local http://www.craigslist.com
for people who want to swap plants or are giving them away.
References :
hey a fellow Tennessean! i live toward Bristol myself, i also do lawn and bushes during the summer. so here is my 2 cents worth. Ive noticed allot of holly bushes around here, a very hearty group and they stay green all year. azeala(spelling) bushes are very popular as well.these flower nicely in the spring. hostas are flowers you only have to plant once! they love it down here! just make sure when planting bushes to allow for room to grow ! some bushes get big! leave yourself a minimum of 5 feet between the house and a newly planted bush! good luck oh yea...... use some really thick plastic and 3 or 4 inches of mulch to keep your weeds down and plants moist during the dog days!
References :
If this is for a home water feature project check your local building supply and get the biggest pond pump you can afford, otherwise you will be disappointed with the flow. It takes a lot more than you think to look good.
References :
If'n your ground isn't frozen have OSU do a soil test

If you have sulphur in your water odds are your going to need some lime

Most veggies like a pH between 6.5 and 7.0

Try this link

Till it up now. Then in early spring, till it again.
15 x 20 is fairly small for a garden, so you will have to limit yourself to your favorite veggies.
Since you're new at this, I recommend tomatoes, peppers and potatoes. They are easy to grow.
Since this is a small area, I suggest using landscape fabric to keep the weeds down.
Don't worry about soil fertility. Since it's a new garden...it's fertile. You'll only have to worry about that after you've planted it for 5 years or more.
But, if you really want to add something, use peat, compost or cow manure. They will enhance your soil if it's clay.
References :
hostas come in many colors, are shade loving, and flower well.

Ferns add green anywhere, many can survive your area and still stay green throught the winter.

Annuals will also add some nice seasonal color.

For coastal and southern north carolia a jelly palm would be perfect to add a little color but will need some extra sun.
References :
There are several website that where you can buy a pump. I suggest you try one of these.

http://www.watergarden.com/

http://www.pondliner.com

http://www.thepondguy.com

Buy a mag-drive pump, they are usually the best choice.

These sites also sell weir boxes that help provide a smooth flow of water at the start of the water fall and are rated for various flow rates. This way if you have an idea how wide you want the fall to be, you can control it by the weir box you purchase.
References :
well i would used plants that compartment the color of your house and "green" plants like ferns that are soft on the eye and go with most things. I would recommend getting something heavy to put around your plants like rocks instead of mulch because it will blow around and get into your pool which causes filter problems. Considering you have limited sun, I would use plants that need medium shade. You can find this information on tags on the plats at Home Depot or Lows or any other outdoor home goods Store.Hardware stores could also have plants. I would use plants that don't have small flowers again because they will fall into your pool. I would use plants with long leaves. hope this helps! email me if you need more help or want me to go into more detail about this.
References :
Considering you have limited sun, I would use plants that need medium shade. You can find this information on tags on the plats at Home Depot or Lows or any other outdoor home goods Store.Hardware stores could also have plants. I would use plants that don’t have small flowers again because they will fall into your pool. I would use plants with long leaves. hope this helps! email me if you need more help or want me to go into more detail about this.
References :

you can get some really good gardening info from: ohio state university.. they have a very good website for gardening info... as well as your county agriculture extention agency... check ohio government to find the web address... when i'm starting a new garden area I : cut sod out, till soil, add ammendments (compost, leaves, organic matter), and continue to add leaves and grass clippings every fall
vege gardening is a lot less complicated than it first appears from all the horticulture info
you can also visit my past answers for more info on improving soil conditions.
Happy Gardening!
References :
Many things can be grown from seeds which are very inexpensive. Create beds to have herbs, flowers, and/or vegetables.

I live in Texas, so my plants would be different but go native for your area. It will be easier and more rewarding.

I don't like much of a lawn, but you can use seeds again for grass or pay up for turf and install yourself. Focus on a perenial garden which will come back year after year and add to it when time and money allows. Good luck.
References :
I don't know about specific manufactures or dealers but it is recommended to check if the place you wish to place it is suitable.

"When checking if a certain garden is suitable for solar powered water fountain, there are two aspects that will determine if a garden is suitable. The first aspect is pretty obvious, the weather conditions and level of sun exposure......... The other aspect is the landscaping of the garden, particularly surrounding the solar water fountain..."

I'm not sure what the soil is like in your area. if it's sandy, you may want to add peat moss. if it's clay, probably compost and gypsum.

Research each plant you select for preferred pH ranges and adjust your soil pH with lime or sulphur (up or down, respectively). A good soil test would be an excellent idea.

A local garden center visit with some of your soil might be a good idea for tips on what to add.

Your question is good with lots of info supplied, but I can't help much. Sorry!

I always tell people to use their imaginations and to do things the way they like them. However, you will probably want to place shorter plants at the bottom of the bank and progress up the bank with taller plants. Taller plants at the bottom of bank would probably hide smaller plants unless they are spaced far enough apart so that they are not hidden. It has been my personal experience, though, that if you have ivy planted anywhere, it will eventually take over and cover and crowd out everything else unless you keep it pulled out and contained in one area. Ivy can become very invasive and sometimes be considered a weed when it begins to take over and damage anything else you plant and like. Good luck and enjoy.
References :
they sell all kinds of plants and flowers, it just depends on what kind you like. Also, you could get things other than flower and plants, like rocks or stones or some kind of mini fence, or even one of those water fountains.
References :
Building the stairs isn't that difficult IF you have carpentry skills, are able to calculate and have patience...not usually something for a typical diyer without understanding the components, especially if you have a long run.

You need to have a landing so the basic deck frame is a good place to look for structure. If you want a short run, the first link will show you what that will look like - for a longer run, you need longer stringers...basically a fairly fast moving slide show - good for visual aid, has dimensions and can be replayed.

Second link is more of a how to with no pictures, the steps being the last part discussed.

Third link is there for you to familiarize yourself with staircase lingo - will help give you a better understanding for what you're undertaking.

Forth link is a stair stringer design calculator.

Before you start, check to see if you need a permit for your area - and - if you need to have cement footings for the stringers. Better to be safe than sorry!

Once the plan is underway, be certain that the ground is level - both for the frame and the stringers when those are attached.

I hope this helps you - best of luck!
References :
Married to a carpenter - worked for a General Contractor.

Usually your local counties extension office will have a Master Gardener program you can consult...they usually have a 'hot-line' you can call. I'm now working on my volunteer hours for my counties MG program and they are a wealth of information. Another thing I do during the spring....if I see a yard / garden I like, it is usually being tended by a good gardener. If I see the gardener out when I'm driving by, I will stop and inquire and ask any questions I may have....believe me, gardeners love to talk plants and if you find an established garden, the owner will be a good source for what grows well where u are...good luck
References :
Get a soil test kit. Usually can get this from your local extensions office. It'll tell you if you need to add any amendments, like lime or potash. Then if you want grass, go to the nearest Home & Garden store and buy bulk grass seed. It's generally cheaper there than a nursery. This would be an opportune time to plant some flower beds too. But use landscape cloth as the grass and weeds will be back.
References :
I have tropical plants around my pool area and love the look.
Yucca plants are so easy to grow and look great.
Umbrella plant also looks tropical and is very easy to grow.
I also have: both red and yellow cannas, bird of paradise, and saga palms.
Oh yes, Hibiscus. I have 4 different colors of those.
References :
If you want a solar powered water fountain, they are available online, on ebay, etc. Small ones for as little as $35-40. They will make a small spray of water when the sun shines.

I know of no solar powered self-contained pump for filtration, though. I have a still-water pond, so the solar fountain is just fine. If you want a filter to be powered, you'll need to spend money on a more extensive array, including electric storage, so that it will run when the sun is NOT shining. I have not seen them available.
References :
Contact your local County Extention Agency and ask about the local Master Gardening club. They can tell you what works best for where you live, from what varieties to plant to the best time- and location- to plant, prune etc. They can also offer book titles, websites, the best nurseries etc. If no MG club, the agent should be able to point you in the right direction. By the way, the second growing season is to grow a second crop. It's wonderful to live in Southern USA!
References :
New Mexico Master Gardeners Club

I use Filterific. They have an excellent brochure. It will help calculate how many gallons of water by the width, length desired depth. The brochure has a lot of pictures and diagrams to help visualize your project. It is a little on the expensive side. I use a septic tank for anything that is over 250 gallons because of expense. I found filterific at Ewing irrigation and had some what knowledgeable staff. Pond less is the best way to go especially if you have small kids. Often this time of year there are home and garden shows that also can give you more ideas.
References :
15 years of Landscape installation

just don't plant potatoes and onions together. Otherwise, just try to group plants together that grow similarly. Tomatoes and squash grow about the same, and beans and corn will grow in the same of conditions. As long as you aren't crowding drastically different species together, you'll do just fine. Ideally, melons, squash, beans, should be in the same part of the garden. Greens, lettuce, turnips, brussel sprouts, beets, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower can be close to each other. Potatoes can have their own individual section as can onions.
References :
Go to a place like Lowe's--they have racks of books like these with color photos and diagrams and some very detailed directions. You can also go to a nursery or landscape place for ideas. The people there are very helpful. You might want to try this first: drive through some of the neighborhoods in your area (especially where you'd like to live) to get ideas.

[EDIT] I'm in the middle of doing this. Once I got several ideas I used colored pencils and graph paper to map out my thoughts. I realized I needed prices so that was the first step. You might want to do the walkway first if you're using slabs of stone which can get pricey. Plus, unless you can get the sand for underneath and spread it by yourself, you'll need to hire someone. Flowers and trees could come next year. Hint: in the fall nurseries reduce prices on annuals, bushes, shrubs, trees and bulbs--great time to buy. I found nurseries are better than catalogs because the nursery's plants are grown for your climate and water conditions.

[EDIT] BE aware your garden areas won't begin to look like the pictures--they remove the old plants and literally cram in new plants fresh from the nursery when they're doing a photo shoot. That's why all the photos look so great. Be aware certain magazines cater to the West Coast which may not be suitable for plants in your area.
References :
it is about what nutrient that plants need, and what it may give.
peanuts give Nitrogen (the bacteria on the root actually)
banana needs plenty of potassium,
carbohydrate means need plenty of sun.
colorful one needs micro nutrients, eg: Fe, Mg, ect

other thing: if the root goes deep under ground, it doesn't affected with something that grow on the surface.

if something wrong, just put some manure. it'll helps a lot.
References :
We had to do the same exact thing, and I went with a couple of ornamental grasses in front and on the sides, and irises in between. It looks really nice :) GL!!!
References :
Hey Moonsocket,

The herbacides that are used to kill grass for residential use are usually the type that get on the green leaves, and cause the plant to choke out. Once the herbacide hits the dirt, it becomes ineffective.

So, you should be able to scratch the surface of your dirt, spread some lawn seed (the type depends on your location and preference). Rake it in again, to slightly cover it, then water each day, for about 14 to 21 days. That should produce a new lawn.

Best of luck. If you name the herbacide that he used, it could be checked to see if what I said is true.
