There are a lot of backyard landscape ideas you can actually try to use to put some life into your backyard. All you need to do is do a little research and add a little elbow grease to give your backyard, and your dying grass, a new lease on life. Backyards are being created to become the "home away from home getaway" or staycation. A place to create outdoor rooms that fit your lifestyle and adds useable outdoor living space to your home. The backyard design is too pretty if you want it to be.

Trellis, arbors, and archways add height. Trellises can be used for climbing flowers as well as vines or to create a up and down garden of small fruits and vegetables while arbors as well as arches can be places on walkways or even entry ways. This sort of structure provide additional depth to the landscaping.

The particular leaves of many fodder plants are also edible through humans, but usually only eaten beneath famine conditions. Examples include alfalfa, clover, and most grasses, including wheat and barley. These types of plants are often a lot more prolific than more common leaf vegetables, but exploitation of these rich nutrition is tough, primarily because of their higher fiber content. This particular obstacle can be overcome by further digesting such as drying as well as grinding into powder or pulping and pressing for juice.

Herbaceous perennial and biennial crops have stems which die at the end with the growing season, but parts of the plant endure under or near the ground from year to year (for biennials, until the subsequent growing season, when they flower and perish). New growth develops from living tissues remaining on or perhaps under the ground, which includes roots, a caudex (the thickened portion of the stem at ground level) or even various types of underground comes, such as bulbs, corms, stolons, rhizomes and tubers. Examples of herbaceous biennials include carrot, parsnip and common ragwort; herbaceous perennials include peony, hosta, mint, most ferns and most grasses. By contrast, non-herbaceous perennial vegetation is woody plants which may have stems above soil that remain still living during the dormant period and grow limbs the next year from the above-ground parts - included in this are trees, shrubs as well as vines.

Place, size, budget are characteristics to be considered when selecting accessories to improve a garden's deco. Accessories are made of different materials such as copper mineral, stone, wood, bamboo, metal, stainless steel, clay courts, stained glass, concrete, iron, and the climate where the garden is found will determine which material works best to ensure accessories last long.

A garden's decoration with the appropriate add-ons also adds character and beauty, and depending on the situation, the design chosen will provide features to the garden. Paths for instance are functional for the maintenance of your garden, and can be in some way decorated using different materials such as pinus radiata needles, wood chips, fieldstone, or bricks. Furthermore, backdrops include wall space, fences, and bushes which are intended to offer privacy. Moreover, these people hide unsightly places and also emphasize desired views.

A herbaceous plant (in botanical use simply herb) is a plant which has leaves and comes that die down at the end of the growing season to the earth level. They have absolutely no persistent woody stem above ground. Herbaceous crops may be annuals, biennials or perhaps perennials. Annual herbaceous plants perish completely at the end from the growing season or when they have flowered and also fruited, and they then develop again from seed.

Gardening may be done at a professional level or even as a hobby. There is a wide range of accessories available in the market for both the professional novel reader and the amateur to exercise their imagination. These accessories might help decorate all the different areas of gardens such as wander ways and elevated boxes, and any other area.

Garden layout is considered to be an art in most cultures, distinguished coming from gardening, which generally means garden maintenance. Garden design may include different themes such as perennial, butterfly, wildlife, Japanese, water, tropical, or even shade gardens. Inside Japan, Samurai and Zen monks were often required to construct decorative gardens or perhaps practice related abilities like flower arrangement called ikebana. In 18th century The european union, country estates were refashioned by landscape home gardeners into formal gardens or landscaped playground lands, such as from Versailles, France, or Stowe, England. Today, landscape designers and garden creative designers continue to produce attractively creative designs for private garden spaces. Expert landscape designers are usually certified by the Organization of Professional Landscaping Designers

Great post!

It's always tough figuring out whether to hire help or try to do it yourself. My wife and I spent the fall attempting to lay a brick path with container gardens, and it was tough... but we did it. I also found another blog post that you might find helpful for this. Thanks again!

Bonsai trees are very good to have around, but they are just so troublesome to grow and maintain. That is where artificial bonsai trees come into the picture. They look like the original don't involve as much work as the second.

Dining al fresco can be a lot of fun, whether the food is prepared on a barbecue or indoors then brought out. You can get a patio umbrella or awning for hot days where you want to enjoy being outside but do not want to burn in the sun.

While we're talking about topics related to Any suggestions on how I can landscape my backyard? | Backyard Landscape Pro, The truth is most people could do plenty to improve their outdoor area with little money spent. One method is to creatively work with what you already have, and start with less grandiose projects that you actually finish.

Wow these are all great tips. I have a large yard that is all sod right now. I had it installed in the fall by Evergreen Turf and have been focusing on keeping it alive before I add anything. I might wait till the end of the summer to add more elements, but when I do these tips will come in hand, thanks for sharing.

Your mulched areas are a great thing - lots of potential for beautiful color and plant shapes! By "ground cover" did you mean "weed barrier" - the fabric that people try to sell you to keep out weeds? it's actually good that you don't have any of that. It can keep your perennials, once you plant them, from spreading to their potential.

You don't need edging, but a bit of work making a natural edge (ie a 3" trench) around the bed will give it a nice finished look.

Your $200 will probably buy you a couple flats of groundcover (nice spreading, low-growing perennial plants), 3 ornamental grasses, and 7-10 perennials.

You always have the option of starting some plants from seed, too. You can purchase cans of mixed seeds for $5 to $10, that you can sprinkle in the area you want to fill. For less maintenance later, be sure to get a mixture that contains mostly perennial plants, not annuals.

Also keep in mind that some vegetable plants and herbs, like tomatoes and basil, can be planted near your front entrance. Get creative with this one - you can get an inviting look, convenient veggie and an inviting aroma this way!

For weed control, you have a couple of choices.1: Take your handy-dandy bottle of roundup after the weeds start, wet them a little and wait a few days for them to croak. 2: Put some newspaper under the mulch, 2-3 sheets thick, laid out flat. It's quite a bit of work, but much better than the fabric "weed barriers." Don't use it in places you'll be seeding, though!

To keep costs down, you can purchase plants online. Perennials, grasses and shrubs can be shipped to you without soil on their roots. It becomes a fairly inexpensive way to get more plants in your landscape.

Lastly, for local advice talk to your Extension agency. Most states have one associated with their major university.

Good luck!
References :
By "ground cover" did you mean "weed barrier" – the fabric that people try to sell you to keep out weeds? it’s actually good that you don’t have any of that. It can keep your perennials, once you plant them, from spreading to their potential.

You don’t need edging, but a bit of work making a natural edge (ie a 3" trench) around the bed will give it a nice finished look.

Get creative with this one – you can get an inviting look, convenient veggie and an inviting aroma this way!

For weed control, you have a couple of choices.1: Take your handy-dandy bottle of roundup after the weeds start, wet them a little and wait a few days for them to croak. 2: Put some newspaper under the mulch, 2-3 sheets thick, laid out flat. It’s quite a bit of work, but much better than the fabric "weed barriers." Don’t use it in places you’ll be seeding, though!

Good luck!
References :

remove the mulch yourself-$0
border the yard with used bricks ( if u are lucky you will get it for free sometimes)-$0
get soil or dirt from home depot or lowes -$25( $5 each).
go to your nursery and tell them ur light and wheather conditions they will suggest you some plants.Good thing is you get sun. Marigolds, and other seeds can make a very inexpensive garden.($10 max)
You are a little late for bulbs but u can plant them in fall by then you garden will be well prepared for them.

Ferns , palms are very less maintainnace (ferns -$5each, palms need lot of research if u want to save money ).Impatients, pansies, begonias are shade loving plants and less maintiance.since you get sun you should be fine with any plant. However your challenge will be leveling, making the soil ready to plant.Good luck you can do a lot in $200 spent wisely and with patience.Dont hurry take your time.
References :
If you are anything like most people you want to get as much as possible for your money, that means sweat equity.....The other best thing is
Decide do you want flowers or shrubs?
Do you want landscape stones?
You certainly want perennials!
.................MOST OF ALL.................
>>>>>>>>>>Shop the Sales<<<<<<<
I always buy at the end of the season
that way I save a whole bunch of money.
Organization prior to your project.
"Plan your work and work your plan."
If you aren't caring about instant gratification. Then take your time!
Good Luck, it's hard work but worth it.

P.S. A good starter flower is the daylilly they multiply so you get more for your money and then you can transplant thru out the yard every year.
They are low maintenance
Stella D'Oro blooms all summer long.

Hostas do as well I bought 2 and the next year made 12. Now I have to thin and give away . They come in a variety of leaf size and colors as well as pretty spike flowers. They like only morning sun though
References :
self

Hi:
You are in a tropcial climate which means there are a lot of different plants available to you.

As far as design, there are so many different things you could consider. Do you want a formal look or an informal? Pathways, one large bed or several small beds. Do you need privacy trees? You will need an area for the dogs to roam around so think when planning a special separate area for them. A fence as well as other outdoor features.

Feel free to contact me at my website as I am a landscaper and designer and would be happy to give you some ideas.
I will direct you to my examples of landscape designs as well as my site map page. The site maps has photos of annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, and herbs. Some of the annuals will go well in your area.
Best of luck and let me know if I can be of help to you. Have a great day!

Several things.
1. Water movement and pooling - if you have areas that are more wet, look for plants that prefer wet soil.
2. Sun - obviously know what type of light the plant likes.
3. pH. Plants that like a higher pH soil are happier next to the house in most soils. Typically, the foundation of a house is concrete which leaks lime into the soil.
4. Roots - most trees should be 10 feet from the house. Be careful with Silver Maple, Cherry and Redwood. Trees like these can actually push in the walls of a submerged basement, tear up sidewalks and wreak havoc.
5. Compatibility. Some plants are toxic to other plants. Black Walnut will kill just about everything around it.
6. Size at maturity. People buy "cute" shrubs because they like the flowers or color. 10 years later, they're living in Sleeping Beauty's castle, surrounded by a jungle.
7. Color arrangement. Consider different layers - light greens, white, reds, etc. Don't just use monotone green. Contrast the color of the house with a shrub, then put another contrast in front of that. If you have room - 3 layers is very luxurious looking.
8. Maintenance. If you don't want to trim or divide, look for things that grow more slowly. In 10b, you probably use Bermuda grass? Consider putting in solid flowerbed edging to stop or severely deter invasive runners. If you have Fescue, you don't have to worry as much.
9. Flowers. Leave limited space for annuals if you want some really amazing color. Otherwise, look at some perennials. Note, however, that Perennials get bigger and bigger each year.
10. Fire. This is more an issue in dry climates. Consider rock against the house rather than mulch. Mulch is very VERY flamable in hot dry weather. Even in the moderate areas of the Northeast, it's not uncommon for catastrophic fires to start in flowerbeds when someone flips a burning cigarette into someone's yard and it lands in the mulch.
11. Shade - put deciduous trees around the south and west sides. The leaves will reduce your power bills in the summer. But they will drop their leaves in the winter allowing that sun to warm the house. Of course - in 10b, this might not matter! Go with Palm Trees!
12. Go Native. Look for plants that are native to your area. They're more likely to survive weather cycles. Imported plants are most prone to escape and cause environmental problems. Look at Honeysuckle in the Northeast, Kudzu in the South, etc.
References :
You could actually contact a local gardener or landscaper and they would put together some visuals on paper for your spending limit. You could choose one of those or edit one of them yourself.
That's how I'd do it. You can get advice here, but not visual pics. Probably, most definetly web sites on it too for ideas!!
References :
I would also suggest going to a local garden center and looking at the different ammendments and soil mixes they sell there. I agree with the tape measurement of the yard. The bags tell you how much to buy and what they cover. I would also get the soil wet to see how dense it really is. You might even take a sample with you to the store.
References :
www.gardenguides.com

living in the north kind of limits your options as far as perennials go, because sowuthwestern plants will not survive cold winters.
you might want to cosider using a lot of large potted plants that would have to be brought indoors in the early fall. cactus, aloe, yucca are all good choices for large terra cotta pots.

there is one yucca that is hardy for northern climates: yucca filamentosa (common name--Adam's needle) try growing 1 or 2 as strong focal points.

a patio made of terra cotta colored tiles (you can get cement blocks dyed terracotta now too) would give your yard a S.W. flair. also having a chimmenia (wood-burning terra cotta stove) on the patio would add some functional and visual interest.

black wrought-iron or twig patio furniture with some navajo print throws would add a splash of bold color. A small fountain could work, but just make sure it is not too elaborite or "greek" looking. choosing a terra cotta over white or gray in all your pots and statuary, patio blocks, etc. will help create the S.W. feeling.

some annual plants you could grow that would fit the theme are:
-sunflowers (many varieties ranging in height from 1 foot to 8 feet, and ranging in color from white thru all the yellows and oranges to red and burgundy)--you could easily do a whole yard in just sunflower varieties alone.
-california poppies (bright orange and drought tolerant)
-rudbeckia (large, bright golden yellow daisies, the best rudbeckia is a variety called "Indian summer" its 2 1/2 feet tall)
-gazania (short, brightly colored daisies with jagged leaves; comes in hot colors)

some perrenials for a S.W. themed garden:
-sedum-succulent leaves; they look like desert plants but are perfectly hardy for northern gardens (come in many many varieties ranging in height from 1 inch to 1 foot), the small ones make excellent groundcover or to grow amongst rocks--make sure and get the ones that have yellow or white flowers.
-hens and chicks- succulent leaves, these are very tough and hardy little plants, they look just like tiny aloe vera plants. they are very drought resistant and will grow on the surface of a rock or between paving stones and patio blocks.(about 2-4 inches tall, and spread very quickly).

it would also look great to have a few pots of herbs on your patio. sage, rosemary, lavender, thyme. the silvery gray-green leaves look awesome in terra cotta pottery or strawberry jars.

I'd be real careful about adding accents like wagon wheels, lanterns, split rail fences, etc. or you'll end up with the rustic country bumpkin look instead of true southwestern.

use terra cotta wherever possible
choose plants that bloom in yellow, orange, white, (a little red is okay) and that have grey-green leaves or succulent leaves.
keep the ornamentation to a minimum and keep it plain and simple and not at all classical or European.
References :
professional gardener

Check the yellow pages under "Landscape Architect." They are experts in design, and know which plants will be suitable for your particular area.

A Concept Plan isn't too expensive, and should include a general design layout and a list of plants to use for different situations. Unfortunately I'm probably not licensed in your State. I have done a lot of work in the Las Vegas area woking with someone who was licensed in Nevada, so am quite experienced in that style of design and won a couple of awards on projects I've worked on down there. I use a similar design here, which is probably a similar climate to where you are.

Click on my profile and e-mail me and give me the specifics on where you are, I may be able to recommend someone in your area.
References :
Hi there. A lot of southwest landscaping incorporates the use of less water. Check out ideas related to an arroyo seca. It is made with rock with places for southwestern plants like cacti, http://www.cas.vanderbilt.edu/bioimages/pages/arizona-plants.htm can help you. Be sure these plants are hardy for cold weather. Some won't survive. The arroyo seca is like a large rock garden with plants that don't require a lot of water to maintain.Have a great time with your project and good luck
References :
If you have ever tried to dismantle a pallet you will know how well the are made, if you get pallets in good condition, and you can get amost new pallets quite cheap there is no reason why they can't be be used under decking but you MUST make sure the are based on a damp prevetion barrier, the best way to achieve this is to put bricks under the pallets and ordniary roof slates between the
pallets and the bricks, roof slates are one of the best damp proof barriers there is, make sure that no part of the pallets are in contact with the ground, or will be in the future, and as a precaution treat the wood with a good preservative. They might not last forever but the will last a very long time.
References :
Experience.

A small waterfall or pond with fountain, gold fish and lotus. Roses, if you can maintain them. Some moss and Korean grass. A few varieties of ficus that grow to be shady trees. I would not recommend cactus, since that is NOT considered good, from the Feng Shui angle. Plant some herbs of medicinal value. Maybe, a back drop of bamboo trees. Add some fruit trees. Palm trees, small ones ONLY, if there is too much thundering in your area. Have a kitchen garden in one portion. Leave place for seasonal flowers. Maybe one citrus tree of your choice. Jade helps. Consult some professional landscaper, too. Mere consultation, should NOT cost you much.
References :
A small waterfall or pond with fountain, gold fish and lotus. Roses, if you can maintain them. Some moss and Korean grass. A few varieties of ficus that grow to be shady trees. I would not recommend cactus, since that is NOT considered good, from the Feng Shui angle. Plant some herbs of medicinal value. Maybe, a back drop of bamboo trees. Add some fruit trees. Palm trees, small ones ONLY, if there is too much thundering in your area. Have a kitchen garden in one portion.
There are many plants for shade, but you may not get the same bold color as you will with sun plants. Try these ideas, then fill in with annuals, such as impatients. The best bet for shade are daylilies -- buy ones that bloom at different times to get continual color, hydrangea (but dont put them too close to tree roots), hostas (not much color in flowers, however) Also, look for shade plants with unique leaves (hellaborus, cora bells).

Also, many ground cover flower in the spring and can handle the areas under trees:

Try local http://www.craigslist.com
for people who want to swap plants or are giving them away.
References :
hey a fellow Tennessean! i live toward Bristol myself, i also do lawn and bushes during the summer. so here is my 2 cents worth. Ive noticed allot of holly bushes around here, a very hearty group and they stay green all year. azeala(spelling) bushes are very popular as well.these flower nicely in the spring. hostas are flowers you only have to plant once! they love it down here! just make sure when planting bushes to allow for room to grow ! some bushes get big! leave yourself a minimum of 5 feet between the house and a newly planted bush! good luck oh yea...... use some really thick plastic and 3 or 4 inches of mulch to keep your weeds down and plants moist during the dog days!
References :
If this is for a home water feature project check your local building supply and get the biggest pond pump you can afford, otherwise you will be disappointed with the flow. It takes a lot more than you think to look good.
